Guests decide how they feel about a hotel within minutes of walking into the lobby. It is where they wait, meet, work and unwind — and it is the space that appears most often in their photos. Here are seven principles we use when designing a lobby lounge.

1. Create zones, not rows

Rows of identical chairs feel like an airport. Break the lounge into small groups of four to six seats around a coffee table, so couples, families and business guests each find their own corner.

2. Mix seat heights and depths

A deep modular sofa invites guests to relax; upright armchairs suit a quick coffee meeting. Offering both makes the space useful all day.

3. Soft curves feel welcoming

Rounded armchairs, curved sofas and circular side tables soften large spaces and help guests move around furniture without bumping into corners. It is why our Contemporary Lobby Lounge is built around curves.

4. Use natural materials

Travertine, oak, wool and bouclé add warmth and age gracefully. They also photograph well in natural light.

5. Light in layers

Combine ambient ceiling light with floor lamps and table lamps so each seating group has its own pool of light. An arc floor lamp over a sofa creates intimacy in even the largest lobby.

6. Power and tables everywhere

Today’s guests are always charging something. Integrate outlets into side tables and consoles, and make sure every seat is within reach of a surface for a drink or a laptop.

7. Specify for heavy traffic

Lobby furniture sees more use than any guest room. Choose performance fabrics, protective glides on every leg and removable seat cushions that can be rotated to spread wear.
