For hotels, this heritage is a powerful way to give guests a sense of place that no international chain can copy.
The challenge is using it without turning a room into a museum. Here is how we approach Egyptian style for modern hospitality.
Choose one hero craft per room
A room with inlay, carving, mashrabiya and brass all competing feels busy. Pick one craft to lead — a carved lotus headboard, a mashrabiya wardrobe or an inlaid coffee table — and keep everything around it calm and simple. Balance ornament with clean upholstery
Pair carved frames with plain, high-quality fabrics in solid colours. Deep emerald, lapis blue, sand and warm gold all work beautifully with dark wood and brass.
Use mashrabiya for light, privacy and zoning
Mashrabiya was designed to filter harsh sunlight and provide privacy while letting air move. In hotels it is perfect for wardrobe doors, room dividers between sleeping and sitting areas, and display cabinets in lounges.
Respect the craft
Real inlay and hand-turned mashrabiya take time. Plan for longer lead times on these pieces and order spares of small items such as side tables, which are the most likely to be damaged.
