Egypt’s coastline is one of the most exciting places in the region to build hospitality — and one of the toughest environments for furniture. Between the North Coast’s summer crowds and the Red Sea’s year-round sun, resort furniture faces UV, salt air, sand and sun cream every single day.
Here is how we design and specify furniture that still looks good after its third season.
Materials that belong by the sea
Teak. Naturally oily and dense, grade-A teak resists moisture and insects. Left untreated it weathers to a soft silver-grey; oiled twice a year it keeps its honey colour.
Powder-coated aluminium. Light, strong and rust-free. It is our first choice for dining chairs and lounge frames that get moved around a pool deck.
Synthetic rattan and rope. All the texture of natural weave with none of the cracking. Look for UV-stabilised fibres.
Outdoor fabrics and quick-dry foam. Solution-dyed acrylic fabrics keep their colour in direct sun, and open-cell foam drains in minutes after a swim or a rain shower.
Indoors, the sea still gets in
Even inside a beach suite, humidity and sand are constant. We use sealed and whitewashed timbers, stainless or brass hardware, washable linen slipcovers and rattan that is supported by a hardwood frame rather than carrying weight on its own. The result is the relaxed, sun-washed look of our Sahel Beach Suite — built to handle real resort use.
Design for how guests actually use a pool deck
- Sun loungers need adjustable backs and should be light enough for one person to move.
- Side tables should be tall enough to reach from a lounger and heavy enough not to blow over.
- Outdoor dining chairs should stack for storage during the winter season.
- Leave clear walkways of at least 90 cm for staff carrying trays.
Maintenance calendar
Rinse outdoor frames with fresh water weekly in high season, oil teak before and after summer, store cushions during the winter months and inspect hardware once a year. A simple routine like this can double the life of a terrace.
